Ugarte: “I Understand the Responsibility of Playing for United”

Manchester United’s summer midfield signing, Manuel Ugarte, spoke to Inside United about the responsibility he feels representing the club.

“We all know what it means to be United, with its rich history,” Ugarte said. “The history, the fans, the mystique. I understand the responsibility that comes with it, and that starts with being fully focused every day, giving 100 percent, and being ready to win trophies.”

Ugarte also shared his thoughts on United’s global impact. “United matches are always on in Uruguay, so we all know the history. When you arrive here and work with people who are part of that history, like Fletcher, they help you understand what it means to be United.”

Reflecting on his journey to United, Ugarte recalled moving to Europe in January 2021 to join Portuguese side Famalicão. Just months later, his transfer fee more than doubled when he joined Sporting Lisbon for €6.5 million to play under Ruben Amorim.

“It all happened so fast! I arrived in January and by June, I was off to Sporting. It’s one of the biggest clubs in Portugal, and I was really proud. I loved my time at Famalicão and Sporting, where I spent nearly three years. Lisbon is an amazing city—the people, the club, my teammates. Everything about it was warm and welcoming, and that made it easier to succeed. We had a great coach who helped me a lot too.”
